Understand the Biodiversity COP

The rapid and continuous loss of biodiversity is leading us to an unprecedented global crisis. Equally critical is the issue of climate change, a loss of biodiversity focuses its main debate on Conferences of the Parties (COPs) from the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), an essential forum for the development of global solutions for biodiversity conservation. These meetings are known as Biodiversity COPs

What is Biodiversity COP?

THE Biodiversity COP is the main international space for discussion and negotiation on the conservation, sustainable use of biodiversity and the fair sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources. Held every two years, it brings together the signatory countries of the CBD to discuss and establish agreements that ensure the protection of global biodiversity

With increasing habitat degradation and the growing risk of species extinction, decisions made in COPs are crucial to implementing effective solutions. Each meeting gains more importance given the urgency of reversing this environmental crisis. In addition to the participation of countries, the Conference is also a key arena for the civil society, O private sector and local communities, which play an important role in ensuring that goals are met.

Agreements

One of the milestones in Biodiversity COPs was the COP10, held in Japan in 2010, where the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, including the Aichi Targets. These global goals aimed to contain biodiversity loss, but unfortunately, none of them were completely achieved, and only six were partially met.

More recently, the COP15, carried out in two phases (2021 and 2022), was fundamental for the negotiation of the new Global Biodiversity Framework, which replaced the Aichi Targets.

A set of agreements were agreed 4 objectives and 23 goals to be achieved by 2030. These objectives are aimed at addressing the crises of biodiversity and of the ecosystemsSome of the commitments include:

  • 30×30 Goal: protect 30% of terrestrial and marine areas by 2030.
  • Ecosystem restoration: restore at least 20% of degraded ecosystems globally.
  • Pollution reduction: reduce pollution from plastics, pesticides and other pollutants that directly affect biodiversity and ecosystems.
  • Respect for the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities: recognize and guarantee the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities over their lands and territories, promoting their participation in biodiversity management

COP 16

The next one COP16, which will take place in Cali, Colombia, from October 21 to November 1, 2024, will be the first after the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. With the theme “Peace with Nature”, the conference invites countries to reflect on their economic models and the urgent need to rethink their relationship with natural resources, promoting a more sustainable future

This will be the time to assess how countries are starting to implement these goals and what still needs to be done to ensure that commitments are met by 2030.

Furthermore, in COP16, it is expected that the discussions will bring a greater emphasis on the connection between biodiversity and economy, including the climate finance and of biodiversity, In other words, the need for mobilize significant financial resources, both from developed countries and multilateral institutions, to support developing regions in implementing their goals.
