In 2019, thinking about the water security of the Miringuava River Basin, located in São José dos Pinhais (PR), the Viva Água movement, which promotes water and climate resilience through nature conservation and the promotion of entrepreneurship with a positive socio-environmental impact. Created by Boticário Group Foundation for Nature Protection, with the financial management of Sitawi, the movement today connects several public and private organizations, and has been gaining strength by forming new partnerships, such as with Volkswagen do Brasil.
Recently, the vehicle manufacturer, in partnership with the Government of the State of Paraná, launched the Sustainable Entrepreneurship Program in São José dos Pinhais. In partnership with the movement, the project aims to boost the local economy through the implementation of sustainable agricultural practices and the promotion of responsible tourism.
According to Anke Manuela Salzmann, Project Manager at Fundação Grupo Boticário, partnerships like this are essential to boost the movement’s performance: “Viva Água works as a great connector of stakeholders working towards a common goal: water security. Partnerships like this are a two-way street. They meet the goals of the movement and the company itself, which sees Viva Água today as a great opportunity to strengthen its ESG agenda,” she comments.
Why the Miringuava River?
The Miringuava River basin is strategic for the metropolitan region of Curitiba. It supplies approximately 500,000 people, including industries and rural producers in the region. With regard to agricultural production, the basin concentrates 70% of all activity in the municipality of São José dos Pinhais/PR, where it is located, supplying 1.5 million people in the region.
For the movement, promoting actions to restore and conserve natural environments is one of the main ways to promote water security. Conserving and recovering native vegetation, adopting better land use practices and promoting the development of sustainable sources of income are the initiative's proposals.
