The Middle Juruá Territory Program is a territorial development initiative focused on the Middle Juruá, a region of high biological importance in the state of Amazonas, which aims to conserve biodiversity and improve the quality of life of the territory’s traditional and indigenous populations.
In this research, the objective is to generate an overview of such impacts on the traditional ways of life of Amazonian communities, especially in the Middle Juruá and its surroundings, as well as to generate subsidies to increase the resilience of production chains.
This watershed, comprising more than 2 million hectares full of lagoons, floodplains and interconnected rivers, was recognized in 2018 as Ramsar Site, making up a select list of wetlands of international importance. The title represents an enormous responsibility and also an opportunity for sustainable use actions that guarantee biodiversity and the quality of life of the populations that reside there.
However, this is only possible with the participation of those who live the daily life of Juruá, civil society organizations and public authorities committed to the quality of life for all. With this study, Sitawi and the partners of the Juruá Middle Territory Program – USAID, Natura, Coca-Cola Brasil and Juruá Middle Territory Forum – also seek to stimulate initiatives for the conservation of local biodiversity and for the social, environmental and economic development of the region.
The study Climate Change and its Impacts on the Sociobiodiversity of the Juruá River was developed by João Vitor Campos-Silva with the participation of André Braga Junqueira, Guilherme G. Mazzochini, Alfredo L. Perez, Marcel Silva, Mariana Estevo, Paulo CM Andrade and reviewed by Roland Widmer, Felipe J. Pires and Júlia Tavares coordinated by Sitawi within the scope of the Juruá Middle Territory Program.
