New initiative aims to mitigate impacts of COVID-19 in the Amazon

The United States Agency for International Development USAID, NPI Expand, the Partners for the Amazon Platform (PPA) and the Sitawi Finances for Good came together to create an initiative that will help fight COVID-19 in Brazil. The new partnership ?PPA Solidarity: Response to COVID-19 in the Amazon? seeks to leverage innovative and scalable solutions in emergency response to the pandemic in all states of the Amazon, especially in Amazonas and Pará.

With an initial contribution of R$ 10.6 million from USAID and NPI Expand, the partnership also sought to leverage resources with private sector partners such as Alcoa, Bank of America, Beraca, Cargill, Caterpillar, Fundo de Sustentabilidade Hydro, Mineração do Rio do Norte, Suzano and Vale, who contributed around R$ 18.2 million to the shares.

Programs include distribution of basic food baskets and hygiene kits to more than 16 thousand families, information campaigns on prevention methods for more than 250 thousand people, support for testing, expansion of ICU beds and rescue of impact businesses, with R$ 1 .5 million in low-interest loans and training.
