SOS Children's Villages, an organization that leads the world's largest care movement, has created a Heritage Fund to continue working to care for and protect children, adolescents, young people and families. The initiative was selected in the “Democratizing Heritage Funds” call for proposals, coordinated by Endowments do Brasil in partnership with Sitawi, which will guarantee exemption from maintenance costs for the first two years.
With almost 60 years of experience in the country, Aldeias Infantis SOS works with children who have lost parental care or are at risk of losing it, in addition to developing humanitarian actions. The creation of the Fund represents an advance in the organization's financial sustainability, allowing donations to generate impact for several generations.
"A Heritage Fund has always been a dream, but the costs to start one are high if you don’t have a large donation to start it, which made this plan unfeasible. The initiative by Endowments do Brasil made it possible to achieve this goal.”, comments Joanna Calazans, Philanthropy and New Strategies Manager at Aldeias Infantis SOS.
Equity Funds are innovative mechanisms
More common abroad, Endowments are financial mechanisms that enable the sustainability of non-profit organizations, contributing to the longevity of their causes. Although they have existed in Brazil since the 1950s, they were only regulated in the country in 2019, with Law 13,800. Read more here.
“Heritage funds are innovative mechanisms that offer organizations a solid foundation for planning the future. They promote financial sustainability in a strategic way, allowing social and environmental impact to be expanded safely and permanently,” says Leonardo Letelir, executive director of Endowments do Brasil and CEO of Sitawi.
Endowments do Brasil is the first multi-cause and multi-beneficiary Endowment Fund Management Organization (OGFP) in the country that adheres to the law. In partnership with Sitawi Finanças do Bem, it operates in an innovative approach that enables the creation of Endowment Funds in a fast, easy and accessible way.
Perpetuity for the cause of childhood
Last year, SOS Children's Villages directly reached more than 24,000 people in vulnerable situations, including more than 400 children and adolescents who were taken into care and who, by court order, were separated from their families. “By working with families at risk of separation and providing quality care for boys and girls who have lost parental care, we work to ensure that no child grows up alone,” explains Joanna.
