Between September 5th and 7th, Sitawi participated in the Round Table on Sustainable Finance held by the regional hub for Latin America of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP FI) Financial Initiative, in Buenos Aires. The event celebrated the 25th anniversary of the UN initiative, which aims to bring financial institutions closer together to share experiences and join forces to adapt to climate change.
Leonardo Letelier, CEO of Sitawi, moderated the panel Human rights and social issues in finance: global and regional solutions. The session discussed financial institutions' experiences in creating value for communities and shared trends in the field of impact businesses that work on human rights with relevance to finance.
“It is very important for the countryside to have such an initiative bringing together important organizations. We see a tendency to seek a meeting of the themes of Impact Investment and Responsible Investment within the Positive Finance agenda of UNEP FI”, declared Letelier.
For Fred Seifert, Manager of Sustainable Finance at Sitawi, the event represents a space for exchange for financial institutions and provided an opportunity for reflection based on the exposure of trends in sustainable finance.
“The financial sector must play an active role in the discussion of climate change, as it finances economic activities that can accelerate or contain this process. Thus, the viability of the sustainable development objectives depends directly on the performance of financial institutions, which must incorporate socio-environmental issues in the management and decision of their investments. An event like this is fundamental because it brings this debate to the center of the agenda of such institutions, in the context and with examples suited to the reality and needs of Latin America”, he commented.
