These products are important not only for our consumption, but also for sustaining our health. <a href=\"https:\/\/sitawi.net\/en\/povos-indigenas-e-sua-importancia-na-conservacao-da-biodiversidade\/\"><strong>indigenous peoples<\/strong> <\/a>and <strong>local communities<\/strong>, whose subsistence depends mainly on extractivism and sustainable management. Photo: Bruno Kelly.<\/sub><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is sociobiodiversity?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">THE <strong>sociobiodiversity<\/strong> can be defined as the interconnection between the <strong>biological diversity (biodiversity)<\/strong> and the <strong>diversity of sociocultural systems<\/strong>, based on knowledge of the<strong> indigenous peoples<\/strong>, of <strong>local communities<\/strong> and <strong>family farmers<\/strong> and in the valorization of ecological processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You <strong>sociobiodiversity products<\/strong> are fundamental for strategies of <strong>conservation<\/strong> and <strong>restoration<\/strong> of ecosystems and <strong>biodiversity<\/strong>, aligned with the <strong>income generation<\/strong> and <strong>food safety<\/strong> of people at local and regional level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite this, these products often <strong>do not receive due recognition<\/strong> for their significant economic, social and environmental contributions. Their true value is often underestimated or neglected, resulting in commercial and political practices that do not reflect their true importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Valuing the standing forest<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, the pricing of <strong>sociobiodiversity production chains<\/strong> is based on traditional economic indicators and metrics, such as prices, costs and profits, which provides a <strong>limited view of value and costs<\/strong> of these sectors. This is because they fail to adequately cover the positive environmental, social and health impacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, considering that the <strong>sociobiodiversity products<\/strong> are based on the <strong>standing forest<\/strong> and that these play a crucial role in mitigating and adapting to <a href=\"https:\/\/sitawi.net\/en\/o-que-sao-mudancas-climaticas-causas-consequencias-e-solucoes\/\">climate change<\/a>, in addition to other ecosystem services, the value of this chain should be considered even greater.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The management of <strong>sociobiodiversity products<\/strong> It develops from strong cultural and customary ties, and integrates a deep system of knowledge and wisdom passed down from generation to generation by <strong>indigenous peoples<\/strong> and <strong>local communities<\/strong>. Recognizing, valuing and incorporating this dimension is essential to unlocking <strong>new financial resources for the Amazon<\/strong>, which can be directed towards significant social improvements, including access to health, education, basic sanitation, electricity, internet and other essential resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To achieve a<strong> fair price<\/strong> For these products, it is essential that the market pays values that reflect their economic, social and environmental contributions. This can be achieved through regulations, economic incentives and financial instruments that promote adequate remuneration, encouraging the adoption of fairer and more sustainable policies and actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/info.sitawi.net\/tnfd_empresas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\" noreferrer noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"550\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sitawi.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/template-cta-para-blogposts-2.png\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP\/\/\/yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27591 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"550\" src=\"https:\/\/sitawi.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/template-cta-para-blogposts-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-27591\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sitawi.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/template-cta-para-blogposts-2.png 700w, https:\/\/sitawi.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/template-cta-para-blogposts-2-300x236.png 300w, https:\/\/sitawi.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/template-cta-para-blogposts-2-15x12.png 15w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Joining forces in favor of sociobiodiversity<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is considered that, in 2019, spending on <strong>biodiversity conservation<\/strong> were between US$124 billion and US$143 billion. However, to reverse the decline in <strong>biodiversity<\/strong> by 2030, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.org\/en-us\/what-we-do\/our-insights\/perspectives\/closing-nature-funding-gap-global-biodiversity-finance\/\">we need to spend between US$$722 and US$$967 billion per year<\/a>This means that the difference in funding needed to protect biodiversity is between US$598 billion and US$824 billion per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To bridge this gap, it is necessary not only <strong>increase the volume of financial resources for nature<\/strong>, but also unlock and diversify other capital flows for biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Associated public policies:<\/strong> Several public policies can be implemented to stimulate sociobiodiversity production chains and promote environmental conservation. National governments, through their budget allocations, represent the largest stable source of financing for nature. Therefore, it is crucial to direct financing, whether directly or indirectly, from national public budgets, through fiscal or regulatory instruments. Some examples of these policies are the Minimum Price Guarantee Policy for sociobiodiversity products (PGPMBio), the Amazon Fund and the Climate Fund.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Private Features: <\/strong>Although governments already play and should continue to play a leading role, they alone cannot provide the funding needed to protect global biodiversity. Nor will philanthropic resources be sufficient to achieve this. For this reason, the private sector and markets are often presented as an opportunity and hope for nature conservation, since in many cases their financial resources far exceed those of governments and philanthropy. <em><a href=\"https:\/\/sitawi.net\/en\/o-que-e-blended-finance\/\">Blended Finance<\/a><\/em> could be an alternative in this sense. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Philanthropy:<\/strong> This could be an effective strategy to increase financial resources for the Amazon bioeconomy. Philanthropic capital can be used to act as initial venture capital or as a catalyst to attract private investment. Fostering sociobiodiversity chains can make them more structured and competitive, in addition to promoting new financing models for the region.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Towards fair valuation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Local associations, cooperatives and organizations of <strong>Amazon<\/strong> are primarily responsible for leading the discussion on the importance of valuing <strong>sociobiodiversity production chains<\/strong>, as well as those that can guarantee a better distribution of resources and fairer remuneration for people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To contribute to this transformation and achieve a <strong>effective financing for biodiversity<\/strong>, it is necessary not only <strong>increase the volume of financial resources for nature<\/strong>, but also <strong>unlock and diversify other capital flows<\/strong>.
