Society demands ethical attitudes, <a href=\"https:\/\/sitawi.net\/en\/responsabilidade-ambiental\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">concrete environmental actions<\/a> and genuine social engagement. In this scenario, <strong>ESG has gone from being a trend to a minimum criterion for those who want to remain relevant<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If before those who were concerned with sustainability and social impact stood out, today <strong>being ESG is the new normal<\/strong> and not being so can mean loss of market, reputation and opportunities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>But what is ESG?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>ESG<\/strong> is the acronym for <strong><em>Environmental, Social and Governance<\/em><\/strong>, or in Portuguese, <strong>Environmental, Social and Governance<\/strong>These three pillars define how committed a company is to: <strong>protect the environment, contribute to a more just and inclusive society, maintain ethical, transparent and responsible management practices<\/strong>. More than a label, <strong>ESG<\/strong> is a strategic compass that guides companies towards longevity, relevance and positive impact.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>ESG<\/strong> works in two ways:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Internally<\/strong>, as a strategic guide to improve processes and align the company with the demands of the 21st century.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Externally<\/strong>, as a criterion increasingly used by consumers, investors and partners to evaluate and choose who to do business with.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The three ESG pillars<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Environmental (<\/strong><strong><em>Environmental<\/em><\/strong><strong>)<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>\u2013 involves practices that reduce negative impacts on the environment and promote sustainability, such as:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduction of pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Proper waste management and efficient use of resources;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adoption of renewable energy and sustainable packaging.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Social <\/strong>\u2013 reflects how the company relates to its employees, communities and society, promoting:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Health and safety for employees;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Respect for human and labor rights;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Support for relevant social causes and projects.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Governance (<\/strong><strong><em>Governance<\/em><\/strong><strong>)<\/strong> \u2013 deals with transparency and responsibility in corporate management, focusing on:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Combating corruption and money laundering;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Clear and reliable accountability;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fair and ethical remuneration policy;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Commitment to the <em>compliance<\/em> and institutional integrity.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Brief history of ESG<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The concept of <strong>ESG<\/strong> first appeared in a 2004 report by <strong>United Nations (UN)<\/strong>, called <a href=\"https:\/\/d306pr3pise04h.cloudfront.net\/docs\/issues_doc%2FFinancial_markets%2Fwho_cares_who_wins.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Who Cares Wins<\/em><\/a> (Whoever cares wins, in Portuguese). At the time, 20 financial institutions from 9 countries came together to find a way to <strong>include environmental, social and governance issues in the capital markets<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since then, it has gained momentum with milestones such as:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>THE <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/sitawi.net\/en\/agenda-2030-o-que-e\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>UN Agenda 2030<\/strong><\/a>, with the 17 SDGs (<a href=\"https:\/\/sitawi.net\/en\/ods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a>);&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Paris Agreement<\/strong>, signed in 2015 to contain the advance of <a href=\"https:\/\/sitawi.net\/en\/o-que-sao-mudancas-climaticas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">climate crisis<\/a>;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The World Economic Forum&#039;s Global Risks Report<\/strong> (2020), which highlighted environmental risks as the most critical;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The BlackRock Letter<\/strong> (2020), in which the world&#039;s largest asset manager made it clear: sustainability is a central decision-making criterion.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why invest in ESG?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Companies that incorporate <strong>ESG<\/strong> reap a number of benefits:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cost reduction<\/strong> with energy efficiency, reuse and less waste;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Increased revenue<\/strong> through sustainable products and services that meet new consumer demands;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Easy access to the capital<\/strong>, attracting investors and financiers aligned with the purpose;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Improved risk management<\/strong>, avoiding reputational and financial crises;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Strengthened reputation<\/strong>, with more trust from customers, partners and employees;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Talent attraction and retention<\/strong>, especially among new generations who seek purpose at work.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Careful: <\/strong><strong><em>greenwashing<\/em><\/strong><strong> it is not ESG<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the growth of <strong>ESG<\/strong>, the misuse of the term has also increased.
