The socio-environmental challenges we face today are increasingly complex, requiring planned and effective responses. In this context, philanthropy began to follow more paths strategic. Thus came into being the Philanthropic Funds, financial mechanisms that strengthen the ecosystem of donations and non-reimbursable resources in the country and contribute to the sustainable development of civil society.
What are Philanthropic Funds?
You Philanthropic Funds are financial mechanisms created to receive and manage donations from various sources, with the aim of supporting specific projects, programs, causes or organizations. They ensure trust in the process of managing and allocating resources, creating or diversifying sources of financing for socio-environmental initiatives. Although they share this principle, the Philanthropic Funds can have different formats, depending on their objectives.
Types of Philanthropic Funds
1 – Philanthropic Funds
They are intended to support specific causes, having as its main characteristic its flexibility adaptation according to the profile of the partners and characteristics of the initiative. These funds can be created by collectives, social organizations, companies, philanthropic individuals or public entities. They allow donations from a single donor or from third parties, whether individuals, legal entities, national or international, as decided in agreement with the fund's founder. The main advantage of this model is the scalability and the transparencyon the path between the donated capital and the tip – the direct beneficiaries.
Philanthropic Fund Models:
- Community Funds: focused on specific communities, usually delimited by territory;
- Thematic Funds: targeted at specific causes, often with their own brands;
- Revolving Fund: grants credit to impact businesses, reinvesting earnings in a cyclical manner;
- Emergency Fund: allocates donations for prevention and/or response to extreme events, avoiding and/or mitigating environmental and social impacts;
- Non-Refundable Fund: enables socio-environmental initiatives with resources from the first sector;
- Reparation Fund: focused on repairing damage caused to communities or territories, generally associated with Conduct Adjustment Terms (TAC).
2 – Equity Funds or Endowments
On the other hand, the Endowments or Endowments, can also be considered philanthropic, but they have a different approach and purpose. These funds aim to promote long-term sustainability for supported causes or institutions. This is because the purpose of Endowments is to preserve the donated capital and use only the income generated to support causes or organizations. Regulated by Law No. 13,800/2019, in Brazil, the model gained strength as a solution to promote financial sustainability and ongoing impact on public interest initiatives.
Who can institute:
- CSOs – support the sustainability of public interest initiatives created and implemented by Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), offering financial breathing space and greater budgetary security for the execution of initiatives, supporting long-term financial sustainability;
- Families – align the family heritage to values and causes of interest, in a structured and transparent manner, allowing resources directed towards the exercise of philanthropy to generate a positive impact on society over generations.

Philanthropic or Heritage Funds: Which to Choose?
- Philanthropic Funds: ideal for those seeking structure, transparency and agility in coordinating resources for specific initiatives, with flexibility for adjustments and reallocations;
- Equity Funds: perfect for those who want to create a lasting legacy, ensuring continuous and sustainable income for causes of public interest.
Management of Philanthropic and Heritage Funds
The efficient management of Philanthropic Funds is essential to ensure that resources are allocated with transparency and impact. To achieve this, it is essential to have a management organization that brings technical expertise and strategic governance. In philanthropic funds, this translates into efficient allocation and flexibility; in equity funds, management monitors the sustainable growth of assets, ensuring the continuity of initiatives over time.
